Violet Margin (formerly Alchemist Review) is open for staff applications for 2022-2023 for ALL positions listed below.

Email a cover letter and resume to Professor Scott Fenton at sfent2@uis.edu by 11.59 pm CST on April 21, 2023. In your cover letter, indicate the positions you are applying for and please rank your preference for each position (For example: “I am most interested in the Managing Editor position, but my second choice is Prose Editor.”). Please also describe what you hope to bring to the editorial team, as well as your expectations of Violet Margin and the role you are applying for.

Positions are open to all UIS undergraduates and graduate students! Online students are also encouraged to apply, and are able to attend meetings and events via video. Working with Violet Margin allows students to gain experience working for a literary magazine, including reading submissions, coordinating and planning literary events, as well as experience with the production and printing of the journal. This practical experience working with a literary magazine allows students the opportunity to gain experience for potential careers in editing, publishing and communications and marketing.

Positions open for applications:

Managing Editor

Lead and mentor editorial staff in selection of writing and artwork for the annual issue. Build creative writing community on campus through events surrounding the journal. Coordinate efforts to raise the profile of the magazine on campus and within the wider literary community. Must be willing and able to attend mandatory Registered Student Organization (RSO) meetings.

15 – 20 hours a week

Assistant Managing Editor

Coordinate publication of the annual issue and promote call for submissions. Assist Managing Editor in selection of writing and artwork for the issue and building creative writing community on campus. Must be willing and able to attend mandatory Registered Student Organization (RSO) meetings. [This position prioritizes applicants interested in learning about the duties of a Managing Editor and serving in this role in the future.]

15 – 20 hours a week

Prose Editor
Select prose work (including fiction, nonfiction, and hybrid forms) for the annual issue. Assist editorial team in building creative writing community on campus through events or distributing promotional materials surrounding the journal.

10 – 15 hours a week

Poetry Editor
Select poems for the annual issue. Assist editorial team in building creative writing community on campus through events or distributing promotional materials surrounding the journal.

10 – 15 hours a week

Visual Art Editor

Select visual art for the annual issue. Work in conjunction with the marketing editor as needed on creating flyers/other advertising and promotion materials. 

6 – 10 hours a week

Marketing Editor

Takes creative direction and manages all social media and the Violet Margin website. Works with visual art editor as needed to create flyers/other advertising and promotion materials. Must be tech-savvy and comfortable learning new applications.

10 – 15 hours a week

Reader

Read and evaluate poetry and/or prose submissions. Assist editorial team in building creative writing community on campus through events or distributing promotional materials surrounding the journal.

6 – 10 hours a week

*Hours per week vary depending on the volume of submissions and any event efforts or RSO meetings attended during the academic semester. Please note these positions are unpaid.
